33 percent of employed immigrants work in agriculture while 24 percent work in construction, the two sectors account for the highest number of employed immigrants, of which 87.3 percent are Haitian.

The United States is the second biggest source of immigrants in the country (2.6%), followed by Spain (1.3%), according to the National Survey of Immigrants (ENI) conducted by the National Statistical Office.

The survey says immigrants will account for around 5.4 percent of Dominican Republic’s total population by 2012.

It says most of the immigrants work in low-skill labor, especially agriculture and the construction, and that more than 25% cannot read or write.
