A Muslim woman, who sued Abercrombie & Fitch for refusing her a sales job based on wearing a headscarf gained legal backing from the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday.
Samantha Elauf, was told she was denied a position at Abercrombie because her head scarf allegedly clashed with the clothing company’s "look policy" when she applied at a Tulsa store in 2008.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) sued the company on Elauf's behalf for discrimination and failure to provide religious accommodations.
“Observance of my faith should not have prevented me from getting a job. I am glad that I stood up for my rights, and happy that the EEOC was there for me and took my complaint to the courts," Elauf said in a statement from the EEOC.
“I am not only standing up for myself, but for all people who wish to adhere to their faith while at work,” she said.
