Shy by nature, Shi Jieying took a risk and join with her teammates in a strike at its factory bags, one of a growing number of labor protests throughout China.

Riot police entered the premises of the factory, ended the strike and took dozens of workers. Terrified by the violence, Shi was hospitalized with heart problems, but with a weak voice from the bed where she lies, expressed a newfound boldness.

"We deserve fair compensation," said Shi, 41, who earns $ 4,700 a year for his work at the Cuiheng Handbag Factory in Nanlang, in southern China. Until recently she did not know she was entitled to Social Security funding and a subsidy to housing - two of the issues at stake in the strike.
